Back in 2003, Trakka’s founders, having recently begun the development of the Trakka Searchlight, recognized the Homeland Security and ISR categories as markets with high growth potential. In order to capitalize on this opportunity, they created a dynamic ‘go-to-market’ plan for expanding the business and its product offering. This led to the mid-2003 acquisition of Gyrocam Systems, an under performing US manufacturer of aerial-gyro-stabilized camera technologies.
The founders assumed day-to-day management responsibilities for both Trakka and Gyrocam, but initially focused on Gyrocam in order to reposition it as a key contractor of the US Department of Defense (DoD). Over the next three years, they built a highly effective management team to engage the US military and developed a strong understanding of DoD programs, procurement, and logistics. The Gyrocam business was completely remodeled, leading to improvement across all core competencies. As a now more powerful and streamlined operation manufacturing and procurement became fully scalable and output increased over 50x, while costs were reduced and performance significantly enhanced.
